Is Your YouTube Viewing Assisting Cryptocurrency Miners?

It could be very likely, especially if you’re domiciled in Spain, Italy, and France. This week Google resolved a case of “cyrptojacking” which enabled hackers to run advertisements on YouTube that consume their CPU power and hydro in order to mine digital-currencies.

How Do Hackers Accomplish This?

Attackers placed mining malware on YouTube using the Google DoubleClick advertising platform. YouTube and Google discovered the attacks by users posting complaints stating their anti-virus programs detected cryptocurrency mining code in the ads. JavaScript code was used by attackers to gain access to about 90% of the hacks. This code is provided by Coinhive which is a dubious mining platform that allows subscribers to earn income by using other people’s CPU power in an unwarranted way.

What Was The Outcome?

The owners of YouTube – Google – stated that this issue was resolved in less than a couple of hours. However, the ads did increase the Web miner detections threefold worldwide. YouTube released the following statement “the ads were blocked in less than two hours and the malicious actors were quickly removed from our platforms.”

How do I protect against these attacks?

Always keep an update to date anti-virus program running at all times. Set up a firewall and regularly scan your computer for viruses. Here is a review of the top 10 anti-virus programs.

Conclusion?
